In Kaabong District, many school-age children with special education needs (SNE) remain excluded from education, with only 2% currently enrolled in school. Those who do attend often face significant challenges that lead to high dropout rates, including limited support services and inadequate infrastructure that does not fully accommodate their needs.

Sustain For Life has already made important contributions toward improving access to education by constructing a 100-bed dormitory, sanitation facilities, a computer room, three classrooms, and a twin house for teachers. Despite this progress, critical gaps remain, particularly in classroom space and staff accommodation.

This project seeks to address these challenges by expanding the number of classrooms to seven in line with Ministry of Education standards, rehabilitating the administration block, improving the overall learning environment, and increasing accommodation capacity for both learners and staff. These interventions will help create a more inclusive, supportive, and accessible learning environment for children with special education needs in Kaabong District.

Project Activities

  • Renovation of the administrative block serving the visually impaired section
  • Construction of three additional classrooms for students with special education needs (SNE)
  • Construction of an additional two-bedroom staff house for SNE teachers
  • Construction of shaded walkways within the school courtyard to ensure the safe movement and accessibility of SNE children
  • Installation of a rainwater drainage system to improve sanitation and protect school infrastructure

Project Goals

  • To provide children with special education needs with a safe, inclusive, and conducive learning environment
  • To improve access to quality education for visually impaired students through enhanced infrastructure and support facilities
  • To ensure adequate accommodation for visually impaired learners and their teachers
  • To strengthen the school’s capacity to support and retain SNE students and staff
